Huddersfield is a great town that is often overlooked, not just in terms of where to go to University but in general too. I’m from Leeds myself, commuting over every day, and didn’t spend too much time in Huddersfield before starting my studies but now, there’s nowhere else I’d rather be for University.

Huddersfield is a town full of history, and hidden interesting places that take you by surprise.

Huddersfield’s highstreet may be lacking in some of the bigger brands, but it’s more than made up by small independent stores where you can find something truly unique – such as Hidden Wardrobe in The Shambles! And I can’t neglect to mention Epicure – my favourite coffee shop located just over the road from the University

The first thing that drew me to Huddersfield was quite silly – being a huge Star Trek fan, I loved that Sir Patrick Stewart was from here and had close links with the University. But the more time I spent here, the more places I discovered that were worth exploring. Going into Huddersfield’s historical places of note, there’s fantastic places to explore such as Castle Hill. Fair warning that it gets incredibly windy up there though, see my snap from there looking very windswept and interesting…

Other places to visit include John Smith Stadium for the sports fans, and if you’re a fan of real ale then you won’t be disappointed by the selection of real Northern pubs around here, such as the Rat and Ratchet (part of the Ossett Brewery group!).

Psst…if you’re looking for an amazing lunch, head to Crawshaw’s too. Thank me later.

Of course, the most obvious thing that helps to put Huddersfield on the map is the University of Huddersfield. Our incredible University was founded in 1825, and has been going from strength to strength since. With 20,000 students choosing to attend, the University has recently rated Gold for teaching excellence, by the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), alongside many other accolades and awards. That might not mean much to us as students but I’m assured it’s a VERY big deal.

Aside from the excellent teaching, the University has also been one of the friendliest places I’ve ever been.

Despite not living in Huddersfield it seemed to take me no time at all to make new friends on my course and settle into University life. And of course, our SU boasts many student societies and activities that aid the immediate community in Huddersfield. The Uni itself doesn’t look half bad either.

Overall, Huddersfield has proved to be an amazing place to study and explore. And a bonus tip for my fellow commuters; if you haven’t already looked up Felix the Station Cat I fully recommend that you do, and keep an eye out for her when you’re passing through the train station…

If there anywhere I’ve missed? Let us know your favourite places in Huddersfield, and what you feel really puts us on the map!
