Ana-Maria Cherdevara

Digital and Social Media Marketing student

Hello, I am Ana-Maria, a second-year Digital Marketing student. Currently undertaking my placement in the International Office.

After my first visit to the UK, I knew that the University of Huddersfield is going to be my top choice university.

Most of the student’s feedback on the Business School  and my course specifically Digital and Social Media Marketing was notable in terms of the teaching excellence that the University provides to each of its students. Since day one I have never been disappointed.

Due to Huddersfield being a fairly small University (just over 17,000 students) the teaching ratio and relationship between students and tutors is something special they are always there to help you grow. Business School has constant activities around the year such as Masterclasses in Marketing and other areas you want to study which will help you develop and help improve as a future professional and the Enterprise Team who offer masterclasses and help you become your own boss by developing your ideas into the real world market.

Huddersfield’s location

I know many International/European students may not have heard about Huddersfield before applying. As students, we are often attracted to big cities. Huddersfield is unique in the fact that it is a small town, but Leeds is only a 20-minute train journey and Manchester is about 30 minutes. There are also other big cities close by such as Sheffield, Bradford, and York.

I think Huddersfield is safer, cheaper, and more beautiful than crowded cities and it is surrounded by green rolling hills and if you want to visit a city you still can easily and affordably. I’ve always felt safe walking home after a night out or a late journey and the local people and students here are friendly and welcoming.

You can also choose from a variety of accommodations from student accommodation to houses, studios, and flats for a reasonable price.

Events and activities

The University of Huddersfield hosts lots of events during the year in which you can get involved from fresher’s week to all the events during the year. Getting involved and being part of any of the societies will broaden your knowledge and university experience. They are a great opportunity to meet new people and make new friends and learn about different cultures, if you join an academic society you'll learn more about your course and interests. I joined the Marketing Society during my second year, and this has helped me so much to meet new like-minded friends and learn about Marketing through monthly masterclasses. We have hosted evening meals with the marketing society members. Even though we were an academic society we did joint socials with the Badminton sports society on my Birthday which was such a great day to remember and be part of.

Study places

There are lots of great places to study on campus, such as the library, however if you want to get off campus, Huddersfield has some of the friendliest coffee shops and brunch places for study time after university or during lunch breaks. Because the campus is based in the town centre there are plenty to choose from. Arcade is mine and my coursemates favourite place for studying as they have a special room where you can enjoy the best coffee and most delicious food whilst studying and getting ready for assignments in a quiet place. Espresso Corner and Coffeevolution are sister coffee shops only five meters away from each other. As their location is very close to my accommodation, when doing my assignments, Coffeevolution always saves me with an early morning coffee and breakfast open from 7 AM till 5 PM every day. Northern Tea House is the first place I tried when I moved to Huddersfield as it is a 2-minute walk from the university and is the place where I would go for coffees during my quick breaks between lectures. It is also an enjoyable study place with the loveliest staff.

Campus diversity

The University of Huddersfield is so diverse with students from all around the world which makes it such a special and welcoming university. Even though I started my first year during the Covid pandemic, the University of Huddersfield was one of the few in the world to have classes on campus at the beginning of the year. Whilst everyone was online, I consider myself lucky enough that I had this opportunity during my first year and that is how I met my best friends and coursemates who are all from different countries and places. I didn’t realise how many international students I would meet in Huddersfield, I’m very grateful as I’ve learned so much about different cultures all around the world.

Castle Hill, Beaumont Park, and Greenhead Park

My favourite green places to go on a walk, read a book and listen to music by myself or with my friends are Castle Hill, Beaumont Park, and Greenhead Park. Huddersfield is surrounded by these beautiful green places where I like to go to relax and unwind after a long day studying at university. They are all about a 6–9-minute drive or a 30–40-minute walk from the university. You can have a picnic with your friends, read a book or just relax on a blanket listening to the birds chirping and admire the beauty of nature.

Cuisine around town

When you visit England and come to Huddersfield, the full English breakfast, fish and chips, and Sunday roast are some of the most traditional British dishes that are a must try when you move in here. There are various great places to dine out when in Huddersfield and you will never struggle to find one. Some top restaurants and bar chains supply a vast variety of cuisines such as Thai, Moroccan, Turkish, Iranian, Polish and many more which I have never tried before or visited any of the countries but had the amazing opportunity to try and come back for takeaways and eating in at the ones I enjoy the most. Street Food is also quite popular around town with most of the restaurants offering the possibility to eat inside.

Theatre, Cinema and HTAFC

There are lots of cultural and sports activities to do in Huddersfield, such as watching an evening play at Laurence Batley Theatre or a movie at the Odeon Cinema. Laurence Batley Theatre is very close to the university, and they host events all year round from drama and contemporary dances to circus and pantomime.

The John Smith’s Stadium is the home of Huddersfield Town Football Club (HTAFC) and the Huddersfield Giants rugby league. My first visit to HTAFC was with the Marketing Society which I am part of and had the most amazing tour of the stadium which made me love it and want to see a match. Even during a rainy game, this place will never disappoint. I had a wonderful time watching Huddersfield Town vs Cardiff City game with my friends and to make the experience even better Huddersfield won 2 – 1.
